Embrace the First Pancake: Why Perfection Isn’t the Starting Point

I’ve noticed that occasionally, both myself and my clients hesitate to start something because it’s not perfect from the very first attempt. Whether it’s a project, a proposal, a post or even an idea, we hold back, waiting for that magical moment when everything is flawless. Here’s the truth: nothing is perfect the first time you do it. Every masterpiece you admire in a museum had a messy, uncertain beginning. Every actor you see starring in blockbuster films once had a small, forgettable role. They took classes, practiced, and learned. Most importantly, they created something, put it out into the world, and opened themselves up to feedback. So then, they had information they could use to improve.

If you never put something out there, there’s nothing for anyone to see. No feedback, no results to track, and nothing to tweak, refine, or improve. You have to create and share that first version to gain the insight needed to get to your best results.

Think of it like making pancakes. When you start making a batch, the first pancake rarely turns out perfectly. It’s edible, sure, but it’s probably not the one you want to serve at brunch. But you need to make that first pancake to understand what adjustments are needed. Maybe the batter needs more liquid for a fluffier texture. Maybe you should add a touch of vanilla or lower the heat on the pan. You only know what to adjust after you’ve made that first imperfect pancake. Then after it’s perfected you can feel confident to expand your pancake repertoire – get wild and add chocolate chips, bananas or hot dogs (don’t judge!).

The key is to embrace that first pancake. Embrace the imperfection. It holds valuable information that will help you make the next one even better. If you wait for perfection before starting, you’ll never get started at all.

So, post that first reel, publish that blog, attend that local networking event. Accept that the first attempt won’t be perfect, and that’s okay. It’s part of the process. That first pancake is the foundation of something truly delicious.

The magic happens when you start—so go make that first pancake!
